Hòn Tranh is located about 1.5 km southeast of the main Phú Quý Island. By canoe, it takes around 10 minutes to reach the island. Shaped like the letter “S,” Hòn Tranh covers an area of 2.8 km², with its widest point being 400 meters and the longest stretch measuring 1,000 meters. The island was once uninhabited and overgrown with blady grass (locally called tranh), which is how it got its name—Hòn Tranh.
In the past, Hòn Tranh was a military outpost with mostly army camps and only a few long-established civilian households. In recent years, as tourism in Phú Quý has grown, the demand for sightseeing tours to Hòn Tranh has also increased, making canoe services to the island a popular choice for visitors.
