Vạn Liên Thành in Phú Quý

Vạn Liên Thành, also known as Đình Vạn Liên, is one of the large communal houses located in Long Hải Commune, Phú Quý Island District. It serves as the worship place for the fishermen of Liên Thành, Long Hải Commune, Phú Quý, Bình Thuận Province.

The Vạn was first built at the end of the 18th century. After many restorations, it now features a large and spacious architecture, with tall stone walls surrounding a grand main gate facing the sea. The Vạn no longer preserves its royal decree (sắc phong) as it was lost and destroyed by fire. There are three main annual ceremonies held here: the Spring Ceremony in the first lunar month, the Autumn Ceremony in the seventh lunar month, and the Commemoration Ceremony on the 13th-14th of the tenth lunar month.

While in agricultural regions the communal house (Đình) is a traditional cultural institution of the village, in coastal fishing and island areas it is called a Vạn. Both Đình and Vạn worship the local tutelary deity (Thành Hoàng) as well as the village’s ancestors. However, the Vạn strongly reflects the fishing community’s religious beliefs; the Thành Hoàng deity in the Vạn is a secondary worship figure, while the primary deity is the Nam Hải God (God of the Southern Sea).
