Enjoying the Hand Shell Snail in Phú Quý

The hand shell snail (Ốc bàn tay) of Phú Quý is a specialty of this island’s sea. Although the name might sound unappetizing, it is actually very delicious and is often pre-ordered by many diners.

The hand shell snail is brownish-black with yellow hues and has a flattened, rounded shape. Its shell has seven spines, five of which are arranged in the middle resembling a hand, which is how it got its name.

The hand shell snail is about the size of an adult’s fist. This species is commonly found in the southern Central coastal waters. It feeds and moves at depths between 25 to 50 meters, so fishermen often have to dive when the water is calm and clear to catch these snails.

October is the breeding and spawning season for the hand shell snail. One snail can live over 20 years.

The snail’s meat is soft yet chewy with a crunchy texture that is very appealing. It is also rich in nutrients such as fats, proteins, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins A, C, and B2.

The hand shell snail can be prepared in many simple but tasty dishes, such as steamed hand shell snail or grilled hand shell snail.
