Squid in Phu Quy – A Delicious, Nutritious, and Affordable Ocean Treasure

If you have the chance to visit Phu Quy Island, you’ll find that nearly every meal on the menu includes some form of squid—from morning to noon, afternoon to night.

The squid, still fresh and lively, shows its pink pigment shimmering and shifting beneath the skin, appearing as tiny spots. Just a few quick turns over hot charcoal bring out the rich, creamy aroma of fresh squid, making your chopsticks twitch and all your senses awaken with an overwhelming craving.

On this island, standing at the pier, you can see squid swimming gently near the shore. Enter the village and you’ll find sun-dried squid, salted squid hanging everywhere, walk into cold storage and see layers of frozen squid stacked neatly, or visit the kitchen where a pot of savory squid porridge is being prepared to welcome distant guests… I’m tempted to add the nickname “Squid Island” to this place alongside its other well-known names like Thu Islet and Khoai Islet, to complete the set.
