Unique and Unusual: Freediving Experience in Phú Quý Island

Underwater photography has been around for quite some time both in Vietnam and around the world. However, recently, stunning images of “ocean brides” or “mermaids” freely swimming and posing in the clear blue sea of Phú Quý Island have been capturing the hearts of many young travelers—especially those who love to “live virtually.”

If you’re someone who enjoys posing in front of the camera and are also passionate about crystal-clear waters, diverse coral ecosystems, and colorful marine life, then underwater photography is the perfect experience when visiting Phú Quý. These “unique and one-of-a-kind” underwater photo sessions are becoming a big draw, particularly among young tourists looking for a new adventure and magical, dream-like photo collections beneath the sea.

In recent times, visitors to Phú Quý Island have been doing more than just checking in at scenic spots and enjoying fresh seafood—they’re also signing up for freediving photo tours. This new tourism product on the “jade island” includes a training session on safe diving techniques and a separate session for underwater photography using specialized equipment.

According to Mr. Châu Đức Chính (a local expert known as Thổ Địa Phú Quý – Underwater), who specializes in underwater photography:

“What makes young people fall in love with underwater shooting here is the vibrant and diverse underwater scenery of Phú Quý.”

There are two main diving areas on the island: Bãi Cạn and Bãi Lăng.

  • Bãi Cạn features stretches of white sand, coral reefs, clownfish, and sea anemones.
  • Bãi Lăng has deeper water, sea grapes, and a rich coral ecosystem.

Currently, there are two main underwater photo/video service packages available on Phú Quý:

  • Package 1: Filming/photography with basic equipment, priced from 1.5 to 2 million VND per person (2 sessions).
  • Package 2: Filming/photography with professional-grade equipment (high-quality cameras), priced from 2 to 3 million VND per person (2 sessions).

To fully enjoy this “ocean bride” or “mermaid” experience, guests should be comfortable in the water and not suffer from cardiovascular or respiratory conditions.

These days, the waters around Phú Quý are crystal clear, and the weather is ideal for marine life to flourish and show off their vibrant colors. If you’ve decided to pack your backpack and head to the peaceful waters of Bình Thuận Province for summer travel, don’t miss the chance to become a “bride of the sea” or a “mermaid” in the beautiful waters of Cù Lao Thu, the other name for Phú Quý Island.
