Phu Quy Flagpole: A Popular Destination for Visitors to the Island

The Phu Quy Flagpole was officially constructed on June 17, 2015, covering an area of nearly 200 square meters on the eastern tip of Chuoi Hill, overlooking Ganh Hang Beach (Trieu Duong Hamlet, Tam Thanh Commune).

The structure consists of four main parts: the base platform, the flagpole pedestal, the staircase, and the surrounding square. The flag tower stands at 22.6 meters tall, made of steel, with a national flag measuring 4 x 6 meters. The pedestal is a 5.2-meter-high concrete block with four equal sides, ensuring solid support for the flagpole. Its surface is clad in grayish-white granite and adorned with symbols including the Red Flag with a Yellow Star, the National Emblem, the official country name, and the geographical coordinates of the site. The stairway and surrounding platform are square-shaped and face the East Sea. The foundation covers about 10.24 square meters and is deeply anchored into bedrock using robust lighthouse-style construction techniques. The national flag hoisted on the pole is specially made from durable fabric to withstand strong sea winds. The total investment for the sovereignty flagpole on Phu Quy Island exceeded VND 1.26 billion (approx. USD 55,000).

This project holds deep symbolic meaning for the nation and plays an important role in promoting patriotism, pride, and awareness of the responsibility to protect Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty among the island’s youth and residents.

More than just a statement of national sovereignty, the Phu Quy Flagpole is a powerful symbol of national pride, inspiring the younger generation with a sense of idealism, faith, and duty to protect the sacred seas and islands of the homeland. Today, it also serves as an attractive sightseeing and tourism destination for visitors from near and far.
