Basic Introduction to Phú Quý Lighthouse

Situated at 108 meters elevation on Mount Cấm (Ngũ Phụng Commune, Phú Quý Island District, Bình Thuận Province), Phú Quý Lighthouse’s geographic coordinates are:

  • Latitude (φ) 10°32’25.3”N – Longitude (λ) 108°55’53.1”E (VN-2000 system)

  • Latitude (φ) 10°32’23.1”N – Longitude (λ) 108°55’58.1”E (HN-72 system)

  • Latitude (φ) 10°32’21.5”N – Longitude (λ) 108°55’59.5”E (WGS-84 system)

It was officially put into operation on February 18, 1994, then renovated and completed on August 19, 1997. The lighthouse’s main function is to indicate the location of Phú Quý Island; its coastal light guides vessels navigating the Phan Thiết sea area (Bình Thuận). Over many years, it has remained active with every fishing voyage of Phú Quý’s islanders and stands as a significant landmark affirming Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty.

Phú Quý Lighthouse uses a white light with a group of two flashes every 15 seconds (0.117s + 4.883s + 0.117s + 9.883s = 15s). It emits light in a 360° range, visible up to 27 nautical miles (1 nautical mile = 1,853.2 meters) with an observer eye height of 5 meters. The effective range at atmospheric light transmission coefficient t = 0.74 is 20 nautical miles. The lighthouse is powered by solar energy, automatically switching on and off according to weather changes, mainly operating between 5:45 PM and 5:45 AM the following day.

Phú Quý Lighthouse has a beautiful design with a box-shaped tower painted gray and a station house painted dark yellow. It stands majestically amid the green forest and the vast ocean. The total height from sea level (“0” nautical chart reference) is 126 meters, with the tower itself being 20 meters tall from the light focal point to the foundation, and an average width of 4.0 meters.

Visitors from near and far who come to the island can enjoy panoramic views of the entire Phú Quý island district from the lighthouse, breathe the fresh sea air, and gaze over the endless ocean to deepen their love for the homeland at the frontline of the sea.

Currently, Phú Quý Lighthouse is managed by the Southern Central Maritime Safety Company (under the Southern Maritime Safety Corporation – Ministry of Transport).
