Vạn Phú Thạnh on Phú Quý Island

Vạn Phú Thạnh, located in Phú Thạnh Village, Long Hải Commune, was originally built in the early 19th century and underwent major renovations in 1908. A new, grand gate was constructed in 2001.

The Vạn (a type of communal temple dedicated to the Whale God) still preserves two imperial decrees (sắc phong) honoring the deity Nam Hải (Lord of the South Sea) from the reigns of Emperor Tự Đức and Emperor Khải Định.

The temple observes three main ceremonial festivals each year:

  • The Spring Offering in the first lunar month,
  • The Autumn Offering in the seventh lunar month, and
  • The Whale Worship Ceremony (Lễ tế Cá Ông) on the 1st day of the third lunar month.
