Stop for a Dreamy Check-In at “Dốc Phượt” Slope on Phu Quy Island

Winding along the edge of the island is the paved 27/4 Road, where the picturesque “Dốc Phượt” slope is easily spotted. Groups of travelers and motorbikes make their way up the incline, stopping at the top to take photos and videos. Young women gather close, posing for selfies with the stunning natural backdrop surrounding them.

The coastal road circling Phu Quy Island offers countless scenic spots, and “Dốc Phượt” is one of the most captivating. Though not particularly steep, the slope curves gently along the coastline and rocky cliffs, forming a harmonious blend of mountains and sea. Towering casuarina trees line the area, their rustling leaves blending with the sound of ocean waves. At the foot of the slope, forest and sea are separated only by a narrow road.

The deep blue of the ocean and sky merges with the lush green of ancient casuarina forests and soft grass, highlighting the grayish slope cutting through the landscape. From the top of the hill, looking eastward, visitors can see Tranh Islet, a dark green landmass resembling a massive whale surfacing from the sea—often seen as a guardian offering shelter and protection to fishing boats during storms.

While “Dốc Phượt” may seem like an ordinary incline on the island’s ring road, the surrounding scenery is anything but ordinary. With forest and sea side by side, every traveler who passes by is drawn to stop, admire the view, snap a few keepsake photos, and marvel at nature’s wonders. And so, it earned its fitting nickname—“Dốc Phượt” (Backpacker’s Slope).

Located in Tam Thanh commune, “Dốc Phượt” offers endless Instagram-worthy photo opportunities. You can stand along the roadside for panoramic shots of both the mountains and sea—without worrying about heavy traffic, as few vehicles pass by. Or, climb to the top of the slope for sweeping views of the crystal-clear ocean, the distant and majestic Tranh Islet, fishing fleets rushing toward Trieu Duong harbor, or gaze upward at the swaying casuarina canopy.

The air here is incredibly fresh and cool. Travelers can take a deep breath, filling their lungs with the pure island breeze—an experience of serenity and poetic charm. Especially at sunrise, “Dốc Phượt” becomes even more magical, as golden light spreads across the sky, bathing the land and sea in a warm, radiant glow.

Just a short distance from “Dốc Phượt” are other famous sights like Bai Nho – Ganh Hang – and the island’s natural ocean pool. The most breathtaking view of all, however, is from Chuoi Hill—home to the Phu Quy Flagpole, where the national flag flutters proudly in the sea breeze. It’s a powerful symbol that stirs pride and awe in every visitor, reminding them of the raw beauty and sacred spirit of this frontier island of Vietnam.
